The problem may not be the tool. It may be what you haven’t taught it yet.

Last week, I hosted a free LinkedIn Live with my friend Deb, who is ridiculously good at using AI without letting it take over the actual thinking.

We tried a little experiment.

Eight job seekers. Different careers. Different AI tools.

And almost all of them gave us the same answer.

We asked the job seekers to use AI to write a Project Manager bullet point. And the responses were polished, professional ... and completely forgettable.

You know the language: Results-driven. Strategic. Cross-functional. Leveraged. Spearheaded.

Except one person.

Their AI basically said: I don’t know enough about you to do this well. Give me more information.

And THAT is the part I want you to pay attention to.

We keep asking AI to rewrite our resumes, tailor our LinkedIn profiles and draft our networking messages before we’ve taught it anything meaningful about us.

So before you ask ChatGPT to write one more thing for your job search, try this:

“I’m new here and you don’t know me yet. Interview me. Ask me one question at a time until you have enough to write project instructions for my job search.”

Then answer it.

Correct it when it gets you wrong. Tell it what you’d never say. Give it better examples.
